Five wines from the western shore of Lake Balaton. Hungary’s most interesting wine region right now — volcanic soils, ancient grape varieties, producers who don’t care about trends.
Gilvesy Pixu Furmint 2023 — dry, taut, mineral. Furmint doing what Furmint does when it’s not trying to be anything else.
Gilvesy Pixu Saba 2022 — made from partially dried grapes. Intense without being sweet. The wine that surprises every table it lands on.
Kolonia Kékfrankos 2023 — red with actual structure. Cool-climate fruit, proper tannin, drinks well now and better in two years.
Pap Kéknyelű 2023 — one of Hungary’s rarest varieties. Grown almost nowhere else. You won’t find this on many lists.
Szászi Furmint 2021 — older vintage, more complexity. The one to open last and drink slowly.
